If you're looking for something off the beaten path, try "Time Enough for Love" by Robert Heinlein. It is a story of a man who lives for hundreds of years and all the people he meets. One of the main stories about buying two slaves and trying to free them, only for them not to want to be freed because they've never known anything but slavery. It is really interesting to see how he has to teach them to be independent and WANT to be free.
