Australia is the largest island. If people who have answered before actually took time to study and not just blindly believe what their teachers told they would know that the continent that Australia is a part of is called Oceania. Not only is Australia an island, it is also a country. NOT a continent!!
Australia is one of the countries of the Oceania continent which include Micronesia, Melanesia, Polynesia, and Australia.

Since you are getting two different answer, I'll step in.
Austraila has more area, but it is considered an continent, not an island. If you are going to say Australia, then you may as well say the asian-european "island".
Greenland is the largest island. . .

If you are looking for land (like dirt), the answer is Greenland (~2,000,000 km^2). If you want land mass (solid object) the answer is Antarctica (~14,000,000 km^2). Australia is a continent (~7,000,000 km^2).
Edit: Gabs below doesn't realize that her link to Oceania clearly states that Australia is a continent.
