The PS3 has just recently arrived on store shelves so I don't think anyone can definitively say whether the PS3 is a big failure.
Yes, lots of people returned the PS3s because their online price dropped dramatically sometime around December 17th. They could no longer get the exorbitant prices they were asking for them.
There are many PS3s being shipped out currently, so many are now on hand to purchase. At this point, the Xbox 360 does have the advantage because it has a much larger game library. There are more "solid" titles on it. So far, the only title like that for the PS3 is Resistance Fall of Man.
I assume the PS3 will have a very slow improvement. But I feel it could happen. Playstation is a household name and it has many, many fans.
I don't see a price drop in the foreseeable future, though. Since the PS3 comes with a Blu-Ray player, and a standalone one is nearly $1000.... The PS3 is a terrifying bargain and a huge loss to Sony. They will keep it at it's current price point for as long as they can. They may step in and lessen the amount if and when the 360 lowers it's own price. If only to be more competitive.

I think SONY needs to reevaluate their selling strategy. It would be far more beneficial to them if they cut their PS3 price in half, even taking a loss on the hardware in order to make it up with the software for the console. Imagine flooding the market with cheap PS3's, and then having a lot more customers shelling out 60-70 bucks for the games? It would work.
I think Sony also overestimated the demand for the PS3. With a launch coinciding with the more affordable, and innovative Nintendo Wii, and with the XBox 360 price dropping around Christmas as well...there were better options for consumers to spent 500-600 bucks on.

For now the PS3 is not so well.
The launch line up was uninspireing and ultimatly the PS3 is not as entertaining as the Wii, or does it have as many great games as the 360.
For now, yes the PS3 is the weakest console, but that may change later this year once more titles come out for it.

I wouldn't consider it a "failure" but its not doind as good as its competition, Its reasonable to be behind the Xbox of course it got a LONG headstart but compared to WII its lacking in numbers a lot too. The price drop is the reason in my opinion why its not doing as good. You can almost get a WII for half as much and have just as much, if not more fun.
Just type:
www.nextgenwars.com
ANd you can see what the numbers are!
Hope this helped!

uncertain the ps3 has sold less than a million consoles it looks bad for them.the only way they can save themselves is a price drop and a hardware change cause it takes long time to make ps3 because of blue-ray they should've stuck with dvd like 360 untill we found a way to make blue-rays faster and cheaper
p.s 360 rules!!!!!!!!!!!! although what i said is still fact

Yes, it has. Just look at the sales, the price is the problem.
