Why do they do it, what are their emotions behind it and what makes them want to stop?

While attention is a reason for it, it is not the primary reason. Some people honestly believe that in cutting themselves they release stress. It actually does, as it makes your adrenaline pump through your body as you do it, raising the stress level a bit, but once it is gone it lowers your stress in your body and makes you relaxed. People who do this think they can't find another way to do it.

As far as I know reasons for cutting can be: someone is so full of pain that they want to let the pain flow out of their body, or they stopped feeling altogether and cutting is a way to feel at least something or it gives a feeling of being connected to your body so you feel in touch with yourself somehow. This is what friends of mine, who cut themselves, told me. I don't know what would make people stop, but I do know that talking about what's inside a person's mind can help. Only most of the time that's really hard for them to do.

i began reducing at the same time as i changed into 14, i'm 27 now and do not do it as a lot as I used to, yet incidents nonetheless take position. no human being knew I decrease till I were given right into a lengthy time period relationship in my 20s, so it surely wasn't for interest. I went to tremendous lengths to conceal the cuts and scars. i understand some human beings DO decrease for interest, yet that basically skill they favor help and do not understand how or the position to ask for it. For me, reducing turned right into a fashion to regulate thoughts and discomfort at the same time as each and everything outdoors of me felt out of control. i have been clinically determined with an interwoven chain of psychological issues (Tourette's, OCD, borderline, pressure, social phobia) that are all appropriate, and many circumstances i changed into remoted and basically did not understand the thanks to take care of each and each and every of the overpowering thoughts. with information from pinpointing them right into a actual discomfort which I managed, I felt i changed into able to by some skill draw close the pressure and thoughts into something bearable, when you consider that actual discomfort is way a lot less stressful to take care of than emotional. there's a sparkling decrease reason and reaction, all of that's smart. this variety of dealing with rigidity became a self-damaging compulsion, that's straightforward with Tourette's and OCD, a repeated behaviour that reduces pressure from a thoroughly unrelated reason.

Because they are so distraught with themselves that they cut just to know they are alive.
They want to quit becuase they want life to be better.
