It does hurt a bit. You will feel a pinch when the doctor uses his devise to get the stuff out for testing. Than you will feel a bit of pain when he gets ready to withdraw the instrument that he inserted to see inside your vagina. Most doctors talks to you to let you know what he is doing step-by-step. The best thing to do is BREATHE NORMALY and RELAX! It really helps alot. So dont let the umcomfortableness keep you away. ALL women need to have a pap smear exam year.

No, it does not hurt. It may be a little uncomfortable but there should not be any pain involved. I was very nervous my first pap, so I had my sister come in the room with me, she kept me occupied and the exam was over before I knew it. They allow you to bring someone with you if you would feel more comfortable. They talk to you the whole time also to keep your mind off of it. It seriously only takes like 5 seconds then it is over :) Don't worry about it.

No, don't even waste your energy worrying about it. I'm assuming you're a virgin if you're nervous about having something stuck in there.
Try to relax all your pelvic floor muscles and the muscles around the vagina while you're on the table. It will make it _much_ easier, possibly not uncomfortable at all. All the doctor's going to do is put a metal clamp in to hold you open (this is sometimes cold, depending on whether or not they've warmed the tools beforehand) and then swab with a Q-Tip, which you probably won't even feel. And of course they have to check with their fingers inside you while pressing on your abdomen for any spots of pain or lumps, and then check your breasts for lumps. They're not going to stick a whole collection of freezing or sharp metal things in you, so don't worry.

I actually had the same question when I needed oen day and I cried before I had to go ina dn I was terrified, but I told my WOMAN doctor that I was scared and nervous, and so she told me everything to do and what she was doing every second and it didnt hurt at all. The only part that DOESNT HURT BUT IS UNCOMFORTABLE is when they have to put a medal "duck beak" type of tool inside of u a little bit, and all you do is try to relax your muscles down there and they will take a Q-tip and rub a little bit inside of u and takea sample to make sure you dont have anything. It goes by very fast.

Hi, whenever I have to get something like a Pap smear and I'm super-uptight and fearful, I do an energy therapy protocol called Emotional Freedom Technique to bring my anxiety way down-- then I can relax and just get through whatever with no problem. I thought you might want to read about a study with people who have extreme anxiety around going to a dentist... similar to your type of anxiety... and how EFT helps. It is easy to learn and easy to apply. Go here>

My doctor uses a plastic, disposable speculum (instrument that lets the clinician see inside the vagina) that is smaller than the instruments that most physicians use. It made all the difference in the world. There wasn't any discomfort at all.

It doesn't hurt, but it doesn't feel good. If you're relaxed it goes so much easier. I had a doctor once talk about candy bars through the whole thing and I didn't even realize she was finished.

It's more discomfort than painful. It's important to try to relax. It's like getting a needle in a way. You know it's going to hurt a little, you know you're not going to like it-but it's quick, and you know it's for your own good.
