I used to watch the program, as there have been some good performances, and I did find the audition episodes funny. Kelly Clarkson, who has matured as a performer, is a classic example of what the show was meant to be all about. That said...
The program is over-hyped. Most of the finalists are not that good, and I am tired of hearing about their travails. USA Today is particularly guilty of this, and manages to go into excessive detail on all "reality" shows (in fact, they are game shows, and should be so labeled).
The voters are stupid. I gave up on the series during the third season, when the two most talented performers were voted off early on. One of these was Jennifer Hudson, who has gotten her revenge. This season also had the infamous incident when Simon Cowell told Jasmine Trias that the only way she would survive to the next round - her performance being truly abysmal - was if everyone in the state of Hawaii had five friends call in for her: the largest volume of calls from Hawaii to the mainland ever recorded occurred during the voting period. She went down in the next round anyway, good riddance. And Fantasia Barrino was and is not all that hot.
The judges have fallen into self-caricature. There is still much useful criticism (Simon Cowell is kinder than he sounds, and Randy Jackson also provides good comments, while when Paula Abdul isn't being a cheerleader - wasn't she a Laker Girl? - she, too can offer good advice), but let's face it, only Groucho Marx could keep up a string of off-the-cuff witticisms (which he did, on "You Bet Your Life," still shown in re-runs).
I won't knock Carrie Underwood, but as far as I am concerned, American Idol "jumped the shark" when Jennifer Hudson was voted off, missed the other side, fell into the pool and was eaten by the sharks. It visibly deteriorated from that point.
I no longer watch or care about American Idol.
However, I do not regard it as the worst show on television. Many of the other "reality" game shows are far worse, starting with Survivor. I reserve the title of "worst" for the excrescence that is South Park.

I agree with you the first and third on seasons of American Idol were the worst. I hated it! The only reason I liked the second season was because of Clay Aiken. I still think he's gay. But other than that why keep torturing people with the lousy singing and then going to make other reality shows like Grease. Come on give me a break!

How do you expect people who actually like this show to give you an answer after you've insulted them? I don't think it's the worst show on TV and it probably wouldn't be the last show I'd watch if there there was nothing else but other crap on TV.
