Do you mean free e-books? If you are a serious, avid reader and don't mind rare books; this new web site is for you. For example, I can read an essay by Lord Chesterfield praising Dr Johnson with honeyed words since he knew the two-volume Folio Dictionary was in the verge of publication. In fact, Dr Johnson once went to visit him for his Patronage but was denied for some reasons, then the great man of letters disappointedly returned home and kept pushing on his monumental Dictionary for 6 years. As a result, Dr Johnson wrote a famous letter with good reasons not to accept the Lord's Patronage.
I think I won't never read the honeyed essay unless I go abroad to visit a good university library in the UK or the British Library.

the obvious answer is library, but you can write to publishing companies and request books (samples). The books will come with no covers, because it is a sample, but the story is readable. I get a lot of free books through publishers for teaching. They send samples hoping you will use it for the following year.

Ever hear of the public library? Just make sure your book aren't overdue and if they are, pay your fines because it could affect your credit.
