before they sign-up? I don't have my own camcorder, nor do I know anyone in 'the business.' How long on average are the scholastic programs? I hear that film schools cost a tremendous amount of money. Is this true? I am a writer, although most of my work is in non-fiction, but I've had some short fiction published in a few local, literary magazines. I'm 47 (hopefully, not too old) and work full time. Any suggestions?

The big ones, USC, UCLA and NYU are regular academic programs, and I would say they are highly competitive once you get to a certain point. Cal Arts sounds impressive and yes, is very expensive, as is USC. If you're in state for the others, however, tuition should be doable. But is this the route for you? Maybe, or maybe you're looking for a place that just does film work. Be careful when looking at proprietary schools that can cost BIG bucks and that dish out the loans.

Age isn't an issue. Deciding on the best course though is. Should you go to school and obtain a degree? What are you looking for? Directing? Producing? Cinematography? Editing? Animation? The Director's Guild has a competitive internship program - those that finish can be employed as Production Assistants I think.

Do you want to be part of the union or go the independent route? Maybe you can start with some film publications. Check out contests available, volunteer if there's anything local or seek an internship. I would think your writing skills could be an asset.

I don't have the answer for you - but you need to do some research before you take the plunge. I wanted to do film at one point - still do, but in a much different fashion than I once did. In my undergrad, I made a music video and a silent 16mm film - and I was at a small school that offered radio/TV/film. You can make of it what you want. Good luck to you.
