Unfortunately, you don't nessesarily get to "pick" there could be some allergies to some formulas. So i wouldn't suggest getting anything until after the baby is born. My hospital had mine feeding with similac with iron, which is one of the most common, so i stuck with that. aslo if you start one kind, don't switch around on a newborn because it's cheaper until after 6 months or so. annnd if you have a sam's club near you and know someone with a membership, get similac there if that's what you get. you get alot more for the same price as everywhere else, and that is only if you don't do wic. good luck!

I have no judgement when it comes to feeding your baby formula... but I must say breastmik is best. I wasn't able to breastfeed, so my baby is formula fed. I started my baby out on Nestle Good Start Supreme, which was very expensive, and didn't work well with her digestive system. After 3 months, I switched her to the cheaper store-brand stuff (half the price). If you read the ingredients they're all about the same. My baby's digestive system improved with the cheaper stuff.

Before you have your baby, check out the prices of some formulas, and plan to buy at least 1 can per week (maybe more).

Different babies react differently to different formulas, so the right formula for one baby may not be the right one for the next. And finding the right one can be expensive. My suggestion to you is to only buy the smallest amount of formula you can when trying a new one, so you don't have to just toss a $30 can of formula powder if your little one doesnt do well with it. Boy did I learn that the hard way.
I have heard that the ones with DHA and ARA are the best, but so many different brands have that. Good luck.

First of all, let me say Kudos for choosing to formula feed. These days you say the works "baby formula" and you get verbally acosted by some Breast Feeding Nazi. There is NOTHING wrong with formula feeding. My PEDITRICIAN told me that. Heck, SHE formula fed.

That being said.....most of the basic formula's are exactly the same. They will ask you in the hospital if you want Similac or Enfmail (usually these are the only choices because these companies have their product there). Either one is fine. If the baby does okay on it, you can then switch to the cheaper store brands, which are essentially the same thing. If the baby does not tolerate it, you then have to go through a series of testing different formulas, which can be maddening. I like Enfamil myself, beucase they have such a wide range of formulas for different needs.

Good luck and Happy Bottle Feeding!!

I have used Enfamil and Similac. I've heard from pediatricians that they are all pretty much the same. Be aware that if you are considering using WIC, many states only allow one or the other. Powder is usually cheaper, and I found that the Enfamil was easier to mix. If you can afford it, the ready made stuff is infinitely easier, especially at 3 in the morning. Hope this helps and congrats on the new baby.

For my daughter, I use Enfamil LactoFree Lipil....the powder and I use nursery water. Went through several formulas and finally found one that worked
For my son I had to use Alimentum which is an elemental formula ready made. It was the only one he could take.
If you have a family history of food allergies or formula intolerances, you might choose to start your baby off with a soy or elemental formula if you do not want to breastfeed.

Enfamil Lipl or the Similac one that's like that is a good starting point. If you have other children with a history of colic or reflux or other problems, like milk allergies - you can use others accordingly.

As far as which is better, Enfamil or Similac - that's like asking if Coke or Pepsi is better. The actual difference is negligible. I just suggest you pick one and go with it and try not to alternate brands or change too much - you'll just confuse their digestive system.

Good luck and congrats!

I like Enfamil ready made formulas. I do the A.R. because my little guy spit up a lot.
If you do the powders, the texture is really light and my doctor said I'd have to use baby/Nursery water that had vitamins in it, so the ready made seemed easier and wasn't that much more expensive when all was said and done.

**Hey breastfeeding nazis...there are MANY health and personal reasons people chose to feed formula. Just answer the person's question as she asked it, don't push your personal agenda not knowing her circumstances!! Jeeze!

Telling someone that breast feeding is best has nothing to do with being a "breast feeding nazi" it has to do with many women, especially young women, being pressured into making a choice based on the marketing of large companies.

They tell you it's the same. It's not. They tell you it's easier. It's not. They tell you breastfeeding is gross. It's not. So that is why I think that some people who choose formula need to really think about it first, because it's really not the best choice unless there is no way they can breastfeed.

If you're choosing to feed formula.. I would say Good Start Supreme. Its got DHA and ARA like breastmilk and has comfort proteinds making it easy to digest.
