After talking with my son about why the dinosaurs are extinct we came up with the theory that they may have suffered from methane poisoning. Considering that they were predominantly herbivorous, especially the largest creatures, then the methane created from flatulence would have been excessive to the point of polluting the air and thus causing the animals to suffocate. Any thoughts on this?

Methane is CO4 and breaks down in the upper atmosphere into CO, I believe, This causes the green house gas effect, which traps the suns heat. The problem now days is that too much is being projected into the atmosphere, thus overheating us. I do not think that the dinosaurs " farted " themselves to death. There will be others along, who are more informed about this than I.

PS You and your son came up with a conjecture, a bit removed from a theory. Keep plugging, though.

There is no way dinosaur come become extinct due to methane poisoning. Firstly, methane is not abundant in the air and so, that would rule out 1 part of the methane poisoning "guess". Next, even if there is a chance of methane poisoning, I would say all the dinosaur has to come together and fart. Then, make sure that almost none of the dinosaurs could run away to get fresh air. Well, that's impossible,

So, the answer is NO.

Methane breaks down in the atmosphere, so this wouldn't be a problem. Besides, most of the dinosaurs didn't go extinct. They now have feathers and fly around everywhere.....

Firstly methane is not poisonous and secondly methane is broken down in the atmosphere. It doesn't last all that long.
