I am going to be a freshman in high school next year and i want to try out for cheerleading. I have several problems and i hope you can help me with them:

1) My dad really does not support cheerleading. he thinks its stupid and theres nothing to it. which i know is really wrong. he wants me to take swimming, but i dont want to. Isnt my dad supposed to support my choice??

2) I have absolutely no knowledge of cheerleading. Do most cheerleaders have knowledge of cheerleading ever since they were young? And do you think i take a cheerleading camp during this summer, i can learn what it takes to make it to the jv squad??

I really want to do cheerleading, i know its my sure decision!

No where is it written that your dad is supposed to support your decision it would be nice if he did.

A camp might teach you enough to make it as a cheerleader I have not idea how competitive your school is.

Hate to say but if your dad won't support you, I hope that your mom will. I am a middle school cheerleading coach and cheerleading is not cheap. Of course middle schoolers don't have jobs to pay for camp, uniforms, etc. and even if you could get a job, you won't have time to work and go to after school practices, meetings, and games.... and don't forget assignments. You will need someone to help you pay the costs. Is your cheerleading squad traditional or sport? A traditional squad is the squad that does the pep rally, cheers at games from the sidelines, and may do a half time performance. A sport squad is a squad that travels around the nation competing. Most of the sport squads are co-ed, highly trained, extremely difficult stunts, killer flips, you get the point. Its like the Bring it On Squads. If your school has a traditional squad, all you have to do is have some type of rhythm and get a former cheerleader or one that has already made the squad to teach you. You could go to a UCA camp. They will teach you the basics of cheerleading. I think this will be the best option. If your squad is a sport squad, your chances of making the squad are very slim unless you have had years of gymnastics. Whatever happens, I wish you the best of luck. Keep trying and work hard.
Remember Cheerleading is hard work, if it was any easier, it would be called Football!

1. Emphasize the tumbling and gymnastics skills that cheerleaders must master to be good at cheerleading. That might convince him of the legitimacy of the sport.

2. You do not need to have knowledge of cheerleading from a young age. Cheerleading camp would be a good idea- but I would first suggest a private cheerleading coach to help you with tumbling and motion drills. You will learn everything else (i.e. cheers, dances, and stunting) once you make the squad.

Don't be apprehensive about your cheerleading endeavors either! Its easy to pick up and a lot of fun!! Good luck =)

Well you should try out it doesent matter what you'r dad thinks its not his decision it's you'r life not his. Dont worry about not knowing anything about cheerleading thats what the internet is for also you can ask a friend who does cheerleading about it! You should also get tips and cheer to practice from the internet too also you could try a gymnastic class coz cheerleadin is basicly gymnastic.
P.S. The head cheerleader wont mind if you havent cheered sincne you were young as long as youre good!

GO FOR IT HONEY!

my dad doesnt support cheerleading his exact words were "olivia, why waste your talent yelling on the sideline when you could be in the game" but my dad is also a basketball coach after i started cheerleading he kinda changed is mind. well i have had knowledge of cheerleading sence i was young but thats only because my babysitter was a cheerleader. you could go to a camp over the summer to find out more about cheerleading http://cheerleading.about.com

Yea, I'm a guy, haha, but my ex cheered in school, elite squads, and now in college. To make any cheer team your judged on a few criteria: Cheer(your going to need to make up a cheer to perform), Spirit(how motivated and cheerful you are while performing), Dance, Tumbling(passes like round-off, handspring, backhandspring, etc.), and stunting(if your school allows it). You can work on your own to improve and develop the first three, but try and find some local schools that teach classes. Even Elite schools have intro classes, and most YMCA's or athletic oriented facilities provide classes at a reasonable price. Also, start talking to girls that are already doing it(exiting seniors would be best, because you won't be competing with them) they more than likely know a good instructor/program in the area. Best of luck!

Your dad isn't much of a man if he doesn't support you and what you want to do. Ask some of the cheerleaders you know at school for their advice and for their help. Keep trying and working at it, you will learn it and love what you do because you will have accomplished it on your own when you do it!

You can try taking a camp some classes and practise everyday if u practise enough u can do it!! Once your dad sees how much you really want to do cheerleading he will probably follow your choice and support it. Also try doing gymnastics to help u practise for a cheerleader. GOOD LUCK!!! and follow your dreams :)
