I have the older Shuffle.

yes it will. turning off the backlight or setting it at the least time and turning off the equalizer all conserve battery life. and shuffling music also drains the battery faster too.

NO...there is no way to save the battery once you have pressed start.

yeah...because it doesnt have to use as much power to make as much sound.
