Hello, Last night i was given a crossover cable, and want to use it to transfer some videos, and music to my laptop from my desktop. Both computers have Windows XP, and ethernet jacks. I just need to know what to do to directly connect them so that file transfering is possible. Try and be as specific as possible. Thanks so much, Brodster

When I enter all the inforamtion and connect the crossover cable it doesn't show the other computer in the My Computer page, how do i get it to do this?

Just plug the crossover cable into each ethernet port. Then you need to network the computers together. Right click on the My Computer icon and click on Properties. Next go to computer name tab and click on the box on the bottom "change" and make sure both computers are set to the same Workgroup name (at bottom) but different name at the top(thats the name that will show up later). Both should already be at WORKGROUP but you can change them to whatever you want but both need to be the same name.

Next if you have SP2 (service pack 2) go to control panel and click on network setup wizard. If no service pack 2 go to network connections and click on the setup wizard in the left panel. Go through the wizard on each computer and set the name and workgroup name of the computer. Leave the file sharing on when asked for. The two key parts are entering the workgroup name in the wizard and you can leave everything else as default.

Next go to control panel and click on network connections. Theres a tab in the left hand column for My Network Places click that. Then on left tab you will see My Workgroup computers click that. If it worked your second computer name should show up there.

Next you need to share the files you want to share. You can simply right click on the files go to properties click on the shared tab and share it. Or double click on my computer and there is a shared documents folder and you can drop the folders in that folder.

Hopefully I got everything you need.

go to computer1 - go to the control panel - go to network connections - go to the NIC you will be plugging into - right click the NIC's icon and choose properties - scroll thru the list until you see 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), highlight and click properties.
another 'general' window pops up, click 'use the following...'
and set the address to '172.16.1.100' and the subnet mask to '255.255.0.0'. thats it, click 'ok' and close all windows.

Go to the second pc and do everything the same as above except give the address '172.16.1.101' but use the same subnet.

plug in the crossover and you should get link...and share folders.

a quick way to connect to shares is , start menu - run, type '\\172.16.1.100' - press enter. (from the...101 adressed machine)
or better yet, if you are admin...- start menu - run - type '\\172.16.1.100\c$' press enter...you may get the entire cdrive from the other machine.

Truthfully it's easier to use and external hard disk.

Just plug the cable into both of them.

You will than have to configure IP Address and Subnet information for both. Say:

192.168.1.1 using a subnet of 255.255.255.0
192.168.1.2 using a subnet of 255.255.255.0

The gateway can just be the computer's IP address. You don't have to worry abut DNS settings

Right-click on the network icon on the Control panel for each computer and choose properties. You can configure the TCP/IP settings there.

Next you'll have to create user accounts on each system with identical usernames and passwords that have administrative access

Use a DOS to add accounts:

net user comp1 netpass11 /add
net localgroup administrators comp1 /add

comp1 is the username and can be anything
netpass11 is the password and can be anything

These just have to be identical on each system

You'll have to turn off the Windows firewall and turn on file sharing

To connect you can use \\computername\c$ from the Run Dialog box.

Like I said, it's easier to use an external hard disk.

You need to enable file and printer sharing on the computer you want to transfer from. To connect to the other computer goto my network place. You may have to restart both computers to get the folders to show up in network places.
