The same reason any other kind of music is.DA I listen to ALL kinds of music. You can say that country singers have no talent either,I mean seriously who really cares that much about a Ford that they would write a whole song about it.Rock = screaming,if you don't consider rap music then rock shouldn't be either.Rock bands sing about drugs and violence too-Limp Bizkit,Crossfade, etc. Have you actually sat down and watched a person make beats? NO,so how can you say that it is that simple?
You need to shut-up and get your facts straight before you try and prove ignorant points like that and for the people who say "You can't spell crap without rap" grow-up,that is SO 3rd. grade. Think of something new.

Depends on what definition one uses and given that the possible definitions are subjective, capricious and culturally relative one should not think there can be any definite answer to the question. In an attempt to be objective, one simplistic definition of "music" is that it is the science or art of ordering tones or sounds in succession, in combination, and in temporal relationships to produce a composition having unity and continuity. Another definition is a vocal, instrumental, or mechanical sounds having rhythm, melody, or harmony. Even simpler would be a form of art that involves organized and audible sounds and silence. So theoretically, something like farting with some sort of rhythm is indeed music. Certainly rap involves most of these components even if it is “talking fast” (to a rhythm or mixer producing organized sounds). Thus certainly is music in these respects. But it is not so easily determined as music is a social and cultural construction as well as a personal individual preference. One assumes from a question like this that the person posing the question does not find this particular form of expression as “music” based on the questioner’s own social, cultural or individual preferences. Is chocolate ice cream not ice cream because one does not have special affinity for it or prefer vanilla ice cream? More suspect is that it is probably something else in that preference, that which is far more difficult to define or measure. That it takes heart is one, or that there is a notion of the “struggling musician” versus the sell out or no talent hack at the right place or the right time is another. Certainly one could make an argument for jealousy as a main factor is this latter notion, but also there is the intrinsic love of music by many musicians who in some ways find this success a travesty or abuse of music, but are we questioning whether something is good/bad music or that it is music at all? There are many rappers who do indeed struggle, who have intrinsic love of music and talent (at least in my opinion). They possess a certain rhythmic manner which is able to synchronize lyrics (or better described as prose) to a beat. Not everyone can rap, it takes practice. Its vocal art for sure but not in the respect to singing. Often their lyrics such as drug use and violence as well as sex is found in most other genre of music (though often it is hidden using metaphor) and caters to the preferences of the buying masses. There is plenty of rap that has a “better” or more virtuous message, but do we condemn all of rap to this judgement? Does how one created something or how it promotes a demagoguery in the consumer determine whether it is music? Is struggle necessary to make music or even as is suspected by the connotation of this question: good music worth listening to? There are so many stories of how a“10 year old” has created a operetta or symphony. Is that not music because it was not made by composers who struggle and work and study and practice into adulthood to compose a piece? One should think there is room in this world for both. To me eliciting an emotional reaction...through the use of rhythmic or melodious or harmonious sound...telling a story or making a statement...sounds like music. To each his own I guess.

Rap is not for everyone. But in a capitalistic society, its stupid to fight the market forces. I can't believe its so popular with the younger generations. They tend to be more open and less bigoted to different forms of music. My grandparents thought the Beatles were singing devil music.

give me a break...it is music...just like ANY genre of music there is plenty of crap. but hip hop has some incredible producers and poets. rap is, imo, a form of spoken word poetry when done right...there are PLENTY of rap groups that do not rap about drugs and violence. check out kanye west's song 'jesus walks', it's incredible and i'm no chirstian. i bet you anything you couldn't make a decent track to save your life even if given the correct equipment...but my guess is that you wouldn't even have a clue what kind of gear you would need.
come on...search out intelligent hip hop and you will stop making an idiot of yourself showing that you don't know much about music.
here's a link to kanye performing jesus walks live...please give it a listen...note the string arrangements...he has played shows with full orchestras....listen to the lyrics...note the samples he uses and how they are integrated into the song...

Ahhh...is someone jealous because they have no talent. FYI- not all rap is about drugs and violence. Besides, i would like to see you make the beats you swear a ten year old could make. When I see your video on MTV I'll listen to what you have to say. Until then...get over it and change the station!

As they used to say on American Bandstand: It's got a good beat, and I can dance to it.
If you look at it more like spoken poetry set to music, you can see a redeeming musical quality to it. The good artists, which are few, have a certain timbre to their voices, and a flow to their rhythms, which can lead to good music. Personally, I don't like rap, but I know it takes musical, or some other, talent, because I can't do it, and neither can anyone that I know.

The broadest definition of music is organized vibration. There are observable patterns to what is broadly labeled music, and while there are understandable cultural variations, the properties of music are the properties of sound as perceived and processed by humans and animals (birds and insects also make music).
