I am still in college and was a journalism major. I only took a few classes in the subject and switched to Elementary Education...I'm only a year away from getting the degree but I regret the big switch. I'm afraid I messed up completely...do you have to have a journalism degree to write for newspapers? I've already had an internship and have been the editor of the campus newspaper for two years. So I have experience but I won't have the degree. Is it hopeless?

No. In fact some journo profs say a degree won't hurt, but neither will it help when finding a job. Learning about the basics of journalism writing is essential, of course, and you can always save time and money by enrolling in an online course (like newsu.org).

Frankly, practice and building a portfolio of clips is the most important thing to work on.

You don't need any degree to write, not even an elementary education. If you want to be published and have people read what you write ... you had better write well.

Journalism schools train aspiring journalists. If you're not a naturally gifted genius getting a degree is a good start but not a guarantee for success.

No......Pamela Anderson (Ex Mrs. Kid Rock) writes for a women's magazine, and I would bet that she doesn't have a degree in anything. Don't regret your switch, do some writing on the side, you can do both or if you prefer, just do your writing. You have the experience, it's not hopeless. Good luck to you!

No, you don't need a degree in the field, although it does help. Your experience to date should put you on the same footing as other applicants for reporter positions.
