I don't agree with the color statements. I like the white background. But I do have some technical comments. Starting on the opening page: I'd make the words to the right of the video ("sponsor projects, etc.) into links, same as the pics.
I am not sure I completely "get" the project. Your "How it works" page has too many small graphics, making it look cluttered and it doesn't sufficiently explain what it is you are trying to do. Try thinking about it in terms of the five 'w's (who, what, where, when, why, plus how) and in terms of someone who is coming to your site completely unaware of what it is you are doing. I remember a strange English project I had once in middle school. We had to explain every tiny detail of how to make a peanutbutter sandwich -- everything from get the knife out of the drawer to open the jar of peanut butter to open the bag of bread, as if explaining to someone who had absolutely no clue about any of it.
I also wonder about some of your picture windows. They don't seem to explain much (or, rather, they are too vague).
I don't understand why some of your pages open in new windows and others do not. I would keep it to the same window for the most part. I've got three separate pages up just from clicking a couple of links on your site. You also need a 'home' button on each page.
Some of the projects seem completely unreasonable or even impossible. Find Excalibur? Moon dust? Others would be great feats to some and mundane to others. Visit the BBC? Scuba dive off Bora Bora?
I don't know. I think you may have something here, but it requires some more thought.
