i want to tune a 4 string bass so i can play my name is mudd by primus

keep tuning the string down until the sound on the 6th fret matches the sound of the next string up

Be careful! Many chromatic tuners don't work for really low notes, so they won't be able to tell you when that bottom string is in tune. It's better to use the fret method. When the bottom string is tuned to a D, fingering it at the 7th fret will produce an A which should be the same note as the next lowest string.

if you can't hear the note and distinguish that the note is D then you need to buy a chromatic tuner from your local music store. You can plug your bass into the tuner and it will tell you the note you are playing.
