How did the 'stupid guy' come to know that your son found the money? Did your son disclose the value of his find? He could've just said "I found a significant sum of money," the owner would have to know how much was lost, give or take a few dollars.

unfortunately anyone could claim it by saying it was theirs. was it a wallet or just cash! and what were they doing with so much cash on them! i would think it would be really hard to find who it was like i said before anyone could claim it. and i don't know why the police said you can't keep it if you can't prove it was his! i found ten dollars once and this guy said it was his but then we donated it to the local church because he was shady and it was for a good cause. sorry about that
