It's NEW Jersey, because the English settlers already had the original Jersey back in England.
It's the Garden State, because it sounds better than the Landfill State, which it what it actually is.

the original settlers were from Jersey England......Garden State because of the thousands of acres of farm land that produce, corn, potatos, tomatos and etc. Dont judge Jersey by Newark Airport and 20 year old seaports like Port Elizabeth

It's named after the Parkway! haha that was lame...

Supposedly we have a lot of gardens here...although they are trying to build up some of the agriculture too.

It's the state's nickname---Kentucky is the bluegrass state, Ohio is the buckey state, Indiana is the Hoosier state, etc.
