That is a good question. The only answer I can think of is that the Giants' owners blame the second-half collapse because of the devastating injuries to key players. I think though, that the owners are blind and made a huge mistake. The Giants, even with the injuries, should have won at least three of the games they lost, and it was stupid plays, not injuries that hurt them. Coughlin is one of those "old school" coaches who feel that they have to be intimidating and discipline players, and it just doesn't work any more. One Giant said that the team has "tuned Coughlin out". They should have fired him, because the same thing will happen next year. A team with that much talent should have been a lot better.
Of course, if you also think about it, maybe they want to keep Coughlin one more year, in case Cowher decides he is ready to coach after resting for a year. I think that's a legimate reason.

Well the reason for the contract extension is that they didn't want to make it seem like he was a lame-duck coach with one year left on the deal. I think Coughlin must've done some job convincing the front office that the changes he'll make this season will make a difference. He did right by getting rid of Tim Lewis. The D, despite all the injuries, is still playing average at best, even though they have some great talent. In addition, I think the Giants front office realizes there isn't much out there to choose from in terms of replacements. Bill Cowher will sit this year out and probably come back next season. He's definitely target #1 if Coughlin stinks it up next season.

They will probably will wait until next year to dump him . There were not alot of good coach available to be a NY type coach. Cower is still under contract . As a few I pray he is on the sidelines in the Meadowlands next year. He has the smarts , toughness and leadership quality's that have been lacking . Coughlin was a bum in Jacksonville and he was the same jerk off who wouldn't leave his job as coach of Boston College to come to New York only to leave for an expansion team a year or two later. I didn't want him when he came and I don't want him now thankfully that bad toupee wearing GM Acorsie is leaving in a few days , so he can't make stupid trades for a Quarterback who never won , yet was paid like he won the Heisman and National Championship 4 times a piece. His parents call all of the shots for him , his daddy said for Ole' Miss not to hype She-Lie for theHeisman, he didn't need the pressure . Then he cried his way to NY.
Maybe She-Lie Manning will be on a bus out of town with the rest of them , and we can close this crappy chapter in NYG history.

Because for some reason, our general manager must want to see the Giants plummet themselves into a bottomless pit of crappy play calls, player injuries, and bad decisions for the next two years.
Coughlin should have gone.
ASAP.
Argh.

They wanted to be fair to the rest of the league. If the Giants had a good coach, they'd be unbeatable.
