Ralph Bunche was part of the "Black Cabinet" of Franklin Roosevelt. This group was used as consultants to help with minority issues. He helped to lead the Civil Rights with Martin Luther King Jr. in Montgomery, Alabama in 1965. He was appointed, by then Secretary General of the United Nations Dag Hammarskjold, to oversee the commiments of the UN in the Congo during a war there in 1960.
