what year is it, is it push button or manual shift transfer case. Manual shift you should preferrably be at a stop, shift to neutral pull lever into 4WD high or Low, place transmission in desired gear and go. Push button can be done while moving by simply pushing the button for 4WD high or Low.

While in neutral standing still flip the dash switch to the desired speed you'd like to go, High or low. Back the vehicle up three feet. Then put the truck in drive and go. If that doesn't clear the problem up check the oil in the trans. If its low fill it to the proper level. If all else fails head to your local Chevy dealer. It may be the electrical solenoid which actually shifts the trans in and out of 4 wheel drive.

on the push button there should be a light that will illuminate if the 4 wheel drive engages. if it does not turn on when u hit the button you could have a vacuum problem. they had problems with the acchuater on the front end. you can bypass this by bypassing certain vaccum lines.
