Last year I took it to be serviced and windows version 5.0 Build 2195: service pack 4 was installed. Now my computer is asking to insert windows 2000 cd. I was never given any cd's at the time of service. Is there a way this can be fixed, or restored. Most of my progams don't completed come up. Pages are blank. I don't want to go back to the shop, I have a feeling I was ripped off somehow. My computer is old. I'm fustrated with the problems. If I deciede to get rid of it, What do I need to do and where should I dispose it. Thanks,

I'd take the computer back to the same shop and ask them to fix the issue for free. They should have given you a CD since you need to have your own license anyway.

What is happening is windows is trying to install something (like a component) or repair an exsting file. You can look on your hard drive and see if the technician copied the contents of the CD to it. Some tech's do that as it makes work easier if they need something. You can look on ebay and find a 2000 CD and use that as it does not have the activation issues XP has.

Good Luck

You flat out got screwed by the company doing the work. I would avoid them at all cost.
If you are able back up your data and re-install your computer with ME (May Explode :). If you're not able find some techie buddie and have them do it for you for $75 and a case of beer.
Your best option is to just buy a new computer. If you were running ME and then 2000, you're really out of date.

Sounds like these brilliant techs used a SOE dump to the PC, and rebuilt from there, either upgrading or downgrading whatever they used.
You were ripped off. I'd see to it that the Company made good. They might provide some handy stuff legally as recompense

Go and buy XP, and overwrite your 2000 installation.

I'd wait another year or so before considering Vista, let all the alpha testers expose the bugs first!
