Keeping a battery at constant full will slowly wear it out. Many laptops are not smart enough to stop charging a battery when it is full or, at least, they're not smart enough to let the laptop run off of the battery for a while so that the battery gets some "exercise" for lack of a better term. Usually, your best option is to take the battery out if it is removable, or unplug the AC plug for a few hours and run on battery.
My IBM Thinkpad T60 is smart enough to let the battery wear down to 96% or so before charging it back up. IBM thinks that is a good solution, but I'm only trusting their word...

Sez who? The ac adapter is to charge your battery, and to keep it up while you are using it. Unless of course some instruction that came with your computer says this is not allowed, in which case, when your battery runs down, get a new battery.

it won't screw up your battery when its recharging it... only when its fully charged and you have it in.
