I do mean on a whole folder, not just a document. I have folders with very private documents and pictures, other people will be using my computer and I do not want them to be able to open those folders. What can I do?

Yes you can if you are talking about a server level machine. This provides the level of security you seem to be after.
On basic level windows, you can apply the security, but using the onboard system will not allow a Folder lockdown in the high security Server sense. So, run something like Server 2000 or above on your PC, it will look like a regular PC, but have great security.

Download Cryptainer from here: http://www.cypherix.co.uk/cryptainerle/index.htm
Quote: Creates an encrypted container (vault) to store any type of data. Unquote.
After creating an encrypted vault, you can drag and drop files, folders, etc, into the vault. The vault once closed and password protected, will keep personal folders safe from prying eyes inside. Cryptainer is also FREE!

The only way I have found with XP is to make your own account on the computer with a password to sign in. Activate the guest account and guests cannot see any of your documents. Plus they can't delete any of your material, or download and install programs.
Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, User accounts. The screen will show you how to set up your account.

Here is a good link where you can download winrar for here: http://bit.ly/1BooiXa

You can use winrar to decompress zip files and a bunch of other formats. Other good programs are 7zip and winzip but in my opinion winrar is the best one. Fuctionalities are pretty similar for all programs: basically you can decompress a file simply by right-clicking it and by choosing the destination folder.

Winrar is available for free under a trial licence. The good thing is the trial period never ends so you can use it for free with no limitations.

Winrar opens all formats like .zip, .rar, .7z, .iso, .tar, .jar etc. That's why I recommend it.

If different human beings ought to apply the pc you could create a customer login for them and have what they might choose in a shared folder. you additionally can positioned a password on the checklist itself in word. interior the kit menu - click concepts -then click the secure practices tab - there you could sort a password to open the checklist.

Hello,
I assume that your os is Windows XP. If so, unfortunately that isn't so simple. The simplest way I know is to create a new user with a password. But really save isn't it. A other way is to install a software, with that you are able to assign passwords to folders. Or a packaging software like zip, but the password protection is weak.
The kings way is to install a genuine os, like http://www.ubuntu.com or a other Linux distribution ( http://lwn.net/Distributions/ )
