Ok, i know i am a girl, give me a chance...Try removing the fuel pump fuse and turning the engine several times per minute for about 3-5 minutes. Then replace the fuse and try to start. Nissans of that year are known for dumping fuel on top of the cylinders, which will cause a "flooding condition".

I have a 98 Sentra & recently had the same problem. The first (and only) thing we did was replace the spark plugs and she turned right over and started like new!
Good luck!
ps - if it was the alternator, it wouldn't crank, so it can't be that. I've had that die on my old car many times, so I know. It would just "click" when you tried to start it.

The timing is off or spark plugs are bad. The cheapest fix is to replace the spark plugs first to ensure there is fire going to the cylinders. If that didn't work then check the timing belt and the timing.
Sorry you got it backwards, it will turn over but not crank.

The key to this mess is: Did you put the distributor in in time with the engine, for if the distributor is out of time the engine will not run.

you in all danger the two have a bad starter or a bad solenoid, which on your case is a element of the particular starter. If all the different aspects are working, examine your ignition relay and all your fuses first, even even though it in all danger is high a bad starter
