Don't be scared. Your first visit will likely be more of a consultation and maybe an exam. He/she will ask both of you questions about your reproductive history, how long you've been trying to conceive, etc. Depending on your age, he/she will recommend certain tests. We saw one when I was 38, and he recommended various tests, none of which were bad at all. You may want to think about how far you want to take it. Some people want to stay more low tech, and not do IVF or donor eggs, but some people want to do whatever it will take. Have the RE explain these options to you and then you can make an informed decision. I found the whole process fascinating. I preferred to start low-tech, and was pregnant within 10 months. My twins are now 6 years old. (We were able to keep it low tech, btw) I'm really happy we saw an RE. He was really nice, and his wife delivered her baby 2 hours before my twins were delivered!

I've seen an RE for polycystic ovarian syndrome and infertility. The first meeting is usually a consultation, usually with a basic exam (weight, BP, height) and some time spent discussing your personal health history and your goals/reasons for seeing the RE. At that point, he/she will most likely work with you to develop a plan of action and tell you about future steps. Most likely, you will be asked to schedule some more in-depth testing (bloodwork, physical/gyn exam, ultrasound, etc) determined by your medical history and health goals. You should feel comfortable asking any questions and expressing any concerns. Also, make sure you clarify what procedures your insurance will/won't cover, and costs and payment plans for any uncovered options.

RE is reproductive endocrinologist For infertility. I have seen one, it depends what your problem is. I have a tumor on my pituitary gland that makes me infertile. The first appt. they usually just have a consultation, maybe have you do a blood test. It depends why you are going. When i went it was just a consultation and to talk about my blood test and my MRI results.
Good luck...if you know why you are going, make sure to write down all your questions, so you don't forget to ask.
