People on the street and tv and radio seem to talk about "movies" nowadays, rather than "film" (UK). I'm not against it, I just find it interesting. I still prefer "film" myself....

You know, Phantome, you're just the kind of arrogant American that gives your countrymen a bad name. Read my notes again, there's no malice in my comments. Nobhead.

If you don't want your British English to be changed by American English, then why are you on the Internet? Oh, wait, I'm sorry, I'm an American, I shouldn't be poisoning you with my "American English".

Maybe it's because film is an oudated concept. Most "films" these days are conveived using digital media; they don't use film at all, so calling them "films" is innaccurate.

I generally refer to it as either going to the cinema or going to the pictures. If I've a particularly slack day I might watch a DVD. Only when it comes to broadcast media on the telly do I refer to motion pictures as "films". Odd that isn't it?

Cheers.

I like using the word "film," but then again I'm a film student and all of my friends at home think that I'm being totally wierd and arrogant for not calling it a "movie."

Movie is more of a USA expression, here in the UK the term FILM is still used the most, I prefer it also. Have you noticed few people say they have a cold here in the uk now, it seems to be flu now as if they are trying to convince you and themselves its more serious then it is, pathetic.

In prefer to call them "the talkies" as almost nobody calls them this anymore. I have a lot of silent films on DVD and call these "films", the ones with sound I call "talkies".

"Film" nowadays is pretty much referring to what you put in your camera. My best guess is that people think that film is an old word in a modern world, and it got outdated.
