For about the past 2-3 weeks, it looked like the hamster had been wet (looked like sweating all the time). Well the hamster has died. What could have been the cause. It has been eating alot of fruit lately, but what we have found on the internet said that fruit and veggies were good for them. The hamster continued to play alot up until its death and nothing out of the ordinary was noted except the wetness.

The wetness that you talked about was probably just oily fur. It's nothing to be concerned about. Several of mine had that and I have been told that it has to do with the amount of time they groom themselves. A small tub of sand for them to roll in soon remedied the problem.

As to the death, which I am truly sorry to hear about, I am at a loss. Depending on the type of hamster (dwarf or syrian) it could have been due to the fruit. Dwarfs should avoid all fruit as they have a tendency to become diabetic -- veggies in moderation are fine. Syrians seem to handle both fruit and veggies just fine, but once again in moderation. A small amount goes a long way for such a small body. Seed mix should be their staple diet.

Another cause could have been "wet tail". I posted a link that explains about this often fatal condition.

All the best.

fruits r only good for them if they gradually get more and more - if they get a bunch suddenly the fruits can hurt them. how old was ur hampster? it might have been old age
