Always check with our computer manual or documentation for the exact specifications to find out (1) what type of memory is compatible, (2) how much memory it can hold/use, (3) what is the maximum memory you can install, (4) where the memory goes on the motherboard, etc.
If you don't have such documentation, you can most likely find information on your computer's motherboard on the web, either at the manufacturer's website or through some forum.
If you're in-experienced or have never opened up the casing to your computer, I do not recommend you start now, such a mistake can easily damage your computer it done correctly. You might end up paying a little more but in the end, you're insured that if they screw up your computer, they're at fault and not you.

You need to first determine what type of memory your computer uses. If you are comfortable with opening your computer case, then it is relatively easy to install yourself as opposed to bringing into the store. If you have never opened the case and don't know where to put the memory, then it is best to bring it into the store. But it is still really easy to do yourself.

Memory CAN be installed easily yourself, IF you know what kind to get, since there are different kinds of RAM, if you bought your computer say, from Dell you can typically find out by calling them, or by telling the people at geeksquad at your local best buy or something, then they can direct you to the appropriate type of RAM, but really finding the right type is the hardest part, because if you have an open slot in your computer, its as simple as snapping it in, because most ram only fits one way. :)

You can install memory easily yourself.
The type of memory you get will depend on the model of PC which you have. If you go to a memory manufacturers website like http://www.kingston.com or http://www.crucial.com you will be able to look up the type of memory you need for your PC.

memory is easily upgraded, dependant on your motheboard however you may need to place the new stick in a specific slot.
The type of memory needed depends again on the motherboard, also on the meory already in there, If you only have 1 stick in there you may need to find the pair for it as the bus speeds need to be the same.
If your unsure of the procedure or memory types I'd recommend taking it into a store.

Different motherboards are compatible with different types of ram (memory), and therefore only certain ones will fit into your computer. The best option is to go to a computer store unless you know exactly what you need for your computer and how to insert the ram

you can do either or, your better off buying the memory yourself cuz you won't have to pay extra for them to put it in. it is really really simple, many manuals online. to find out what kind you need, open your computer, of course, turn it off and unplug powersource, then find the stick of ram that you have, take it out, and read the label. should say somewhere like PC-**** such as PC-2700 or PC4200 just as examples.

You can easily install it but memory does not always mix well. You are better off installing matched memory & selling or giving away your old memory.
If you buy packaged memory it will have simple instructions.
