x64 and x86 refers to your processor. The Intel Core Duo is a cpu that can run both x64 and x86 operating systems. Currerntly you are probably running the x86 version of XP as most machines are not preinstalled with Windows XP 64. Technically 64 bit systems should be able to run more efficiently but there are compatibility issues as there is not a lot of 64 bit software. Most everyone is still using 32 bit. So to answer your question, your machine can run both. Now you just need to research which Vista version you want to run. My opinion would be the x86.

Unlike the Intel Core, Intel Core 2 is a 64-bit processor, supporting EM64T.
(I got this sentence from Wikipedia)
Also, if you bought the computer before June of 2006, then I think it's 32-bit, not sure though.

your system has nothing to do with the OS but with the CPU. you say you have a Core Duo processor so it's x86.
a Core Duo is NOT 64bit capable because it does not have the EM64T instruction set (only the Core 2 Duo does have it).

I can tell you right here. If you truly have a Core Duo, it is x86. If it is a Core 2 Duo you have x64. Its that simple.
