Homewood, Illinois for example

Homewood and Flossmoor are nice suburbs, but they are surrounded by not-so-nice towns. My boyfriend lives in Flossmoor, and Homewood has many nice homes, but also some run down areas, as well as just plain bad areas. They do have a cute downtown, and if you like pizza you NEED to go to Aurelios! (and ask for your pizza to be cooked in the original oven) Unfortunately it seems like people from the nearby bad areas are trickling into Homewood and Flossmoor. A couple of years ago a bowling alley was opened at 183rd and Kedzie and we were initially excited about it, but it was quickly taken over by the poor people from nearby towns (hazel crest, markham, etc) and now you always see police cars outside it. It's too bad that Homewood is being taken over, because there are some really cute old houses and the train from Homewood is awesome because it takes you right to Michigan avenue in Chicago.
I'm not sure why you need to live in the south suburbs, but if you want to stay down there, Matteson is a better area, and if you go a little bit west, Tinley Park and Orland Park are really nice towns. Good luck with your move to Chicagoland! I've lived here my whole life (in Naperville) and it's really a great area with nice people!

Living in the Melrose Park area it not as crowded or as loud as in Chicago itself. Most of the suburbs are pretty decent, the homes are a distant from each other and somewhat quieter.

Chicago is crowded, homes are more set together, Chicago police have a lot of ground to cover. Suburbs have more of a yard as to Chicago does.

I love living in the suburbs for the fact of more yard space, better parking and just a little bit more quieter.

I grew up and still live in Northbrook, Illinois, a suburn 20+ miles north of the windy city, and I've got to say we are a bunch of total all-white north shore spoiled kids. Schools are great but housing is outrageous, so it's kind a survival of the richest with the taxes here.

I assume you want to move there. I was a resident of Des Plaines, Illinois (just 20 minutes SW of Chi town). Most of today's Chicago suburbs are bustling city wannabes that are growing very fast, unless you go far west of the city or south to the more rural areas. It depends on what you like. If you like lots of action, move close to the city. If your tastes are more quiet in nature, move as far west or south of it as you can. Personally, I moved to a small town in Colorado nine years ago. I like the quiet life!

It's not bad. I lived in Roseland but my family and I moved to Blue Island. It's quiet and nice, although it's changing. I think the further south west you go the safer but if you go too far, like past Orland Park, although it's quiet and nice it seems lonely, especially at night. Plus in those areas it's a buyers market now, so if you want to purchase a house there now's the time.

It depends on the suburb. We used to live in Summit, which is pretty close to downtown and was very rough. Then, after I was grown, my parents lived in Naperville. It was a very nice place, but neighboring Aurora was rough.

Be more specific in your question.
