No, you won't get the CD's, but there will be recovery partition on the hard drive which has the recovery applications on it. If you ever need to re-install windows, all you would need to do is boot up your computer, hit the key which launches the recovery program, it's one of the F keys but I'm not sure which one, follow the on-screen instructions and that's it. Almost all companies do this now, even IBM.

I have a dell myself and I personally deleted the recovery partition because it takes up about 6GB of hard drive space and requested the recovery CD's from Dell. You can pay $10, last time I checked, and receive the CD's with your computer, or follow the instructions at the link below and you will get them for free. All you have to do is email Dell or give them a call and tell them what's mentioned at the link below and you will get it for free in about a week. I tried it myself and got them without a hassle.

For the person who said Dell sucks, that's just stupid. I've had several Dells anad we use only Dells at the company I work at and we have very little problems with them. If you ever do have a problem, like a part failing, you get a replacement in less than a week.

For the person who said get a Mac, if you want to get a system for double the price with lower specs, go right ahead. I'm serious, these Mac people need a reality check.

One word of advice, if you're going to purchase a new system, make sure you get some sort of a Windows Vista upgrade discount. If you don't, wait until the end of this month when Vista is released and get your system then or else you're going to have to pay for yourself to get the Vista upgrade.

Here's the link to get the free recovery CD's: http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=160546&highlight=dell

Good luck

as far as i know, they send you a disk if you ask for it, but you will be able to only use it and the other software they send you on the computer it comes with (they do pre install all the software for you). i am a power user and i am not a fan of dell, but if you just want to use your computer for certain things and don't have the time to become a power user, then go with dell. make sure and tell them what you want to use the computer for, so they give you enough memory and hard drive to last you a long time, as well as graphics and programs you want--but beware! kepp reading--- i have an 8 year old ibm (which i swear by) that runs windows xp pro and aother programs, and the ibm runs as good as any new computer, in some cases better than a new one. a new ibm laptop may be a little more expensive (ibm is now Lenovo), but it will last you a much longer time than a dell. dell adds too many things that are just clog up your memory and hard drive. they say they give you anti virus and other security programs, but what they do is give you trial period, and when the trial period is up (6 months or less), the programs are useless - unless you come up with a credit card to renew. the programs become useless confusing pop ups that you, as a non power user won't be able to get rid off unless you fork over yet more money to someone to fix it. this all usually happens after your warrantee runs out. (i know, i have had to do this for others) i have friends and relatives that have purchased new dells that run slower than my little old ibm laptop because of this and other programs they never use.
if you want to learn more how to become a power user, go to zdnet.com . sign up is free and people at the forums are very helpful. some computer manufacturers like compaq/hp for example don't send you a windows installation cd because they have it pre installed and add a partition on the hard drive that has all the recovery data written right onto the disk inside your computer (and dell may now do this). a partition is a section of your hard drive that is sectioned off from the main data. if you want a new disk, they will send you one for twenty dollars or so. i hope this helps!

Companies do not really send a genuine windows xp cd itself, like one you would buy at best buy. rather they send you a set of cd's that you can use to recover your computer, and those cd's are made specifically for that model computer (a dell) and you can't use them to install on a sony pc or something. but yes the recovery cd's have windows xp in them, but also all the drivers needed for your notebook. that's why the cd's can only be used on your type of notebook.

You asking for something Microsoft does not allow you to do so all I can tell you in theory you could download a copy programe like "CD copy" or "CD rip" for a trial of 30 day's then put you copy of Xp into one drive an CDR in the other click the copy button select a medium speed and hey presto you got a Backup copy.If you only have 1 cd rom copy the disck to the harddrive and then burn the copy.nb. Nero don't like doing it (in bed with microsoft and others ) Take care!

Dell Sucks. But no company sends you the CD. They send you a disk with the image that is on your pc. The image is every piece of software in it's original configuration. You will get a certificate with a serial # in case you ever have to re-image your PC. Buy a Toshiba!

Yup, it's true. You get a recovery disk, but not the actual software CD.

They also install spyware free of charge for you! You only have to pay $49 to have it UNistalled.
