Large buildings have flat roofs as to hold down the costs of such large buildings.
On a pitched roof there is a rise per foot of run that is where you here of roof pitches like 6/12 which is 6 inches of rise per 12 inches of run.
If you have a school house that is 300ft wide by 300ft long and it was a pitched roof with a 6/12 pitch the center roof peek would be 75ft higher then the wall which would take a lot more supplies to make this and most of the times this big of a roof would fail because of the weight.
There is alot more to it then this but, this is the over view of why.

Flat roofs in the southern states are ok. In northern states the weight of the snow and ice along with the freeze and thaw make them a waste of money. A flat roof in these climates has a short life span when compared to a peaked metal roof. Actually the costs of the roofing systems out there make them more economical in the long run.

schools don't use an attic anyway, and flat rooves are much cheaper to install, and maintain
