With about 2:30 to go in the 1st quarter of the Colts/Ravens game, the ref threw a flag on the Raven defense for illegal contact but because Manning's pass was uncatchable, the flag was picked up. I thought illegal contact was irregardless of the pass.

This is two different penalties. Illegal Contact means you illegally touched or held the reciever passed the 5 year "contact zone". This results in a 5 yard penalty.

Pass Interference is when you prevent the reciever from catching the ball thrown to him. The penalty is the ball is marked at the spot of the foul.

Wow...Thats pretty lame the next guy copied exactly what I said. Not to mention the only thing he added is incorrect. There is no 10 yard "bonus", if the reciever catches the ball.

yes there was some minor contact, but if minor contact was a penalty then every passing play would be called pass interference. aj hawk made a play on the ball by jumping over the receiver. the defender has a right to the ball also. its hard to make a call like that on the last play of the game!
