Switch off the IPOD.

Try connecting it to the USB Port

Please check the USB Connected ICON, in the SYSTEM TRAY.

If the USB Port is connected properly with the ipod, It will say Do Not Disconnect.

Else please try connecting other devices with USB Port.
and you can also try connecting your IPOD with others Computer too and see exactly where is the problem.

My Ipod does this a lot too. I have to plug it in, then restart my computer. Then when my computer boots up it recognizes it.
Good luck

As long as iTunes says that everything is updated, it could just be charging. You should be okay to disconnect it.

if it doesn't say do not disconnect then that means it is safe to disconnect it at any time until it says otherwise.
