determine the style (french, country, modern, victorian)
determine the space available and how far you want to go(abstract, detailed reality, part of town or just a doll house hobby)
determine the scale (model assumes not real to life, but, to fit Barbie or an HO train setup)
determine the shell (It could be a gourd, a pvc pipe cut in half,balsa, sheet metal, a shoe, a replica of a landmark home)
then the materials to make the interior could be hand carved wood or bottle caps or scrap fabric)
