Hitler took advantage of the feelings of most of the country following the humiliation of the loss in WWI and the unfair treaty of Versailles. Germany wa broke, inflation and unemployment were out of countrol. Germans were upset and depressed and looking for answers. Hitler, for all of his evil deeds, was an inspiring leader who promised the return the German nation to it's "rightful" place. The Germans actually voted for him to be their leader. And he wasn't all talk. Early in his reign he was able to improve the economy and took action to restore German pride. UNfortunately he was a severaly demented person and he took actions that resulted int he deaths of millions of innocent people.

He became Reichskanzler (chancellor) in 1933 in a democratic election, probably because many people regarded him as a strong leader (Führer means leader) who could solve their problems, esp. their economic problems, as the situation wasn't good at that time, there was a lot of unemployment etc. After Hitler and the NSDAP were elected they made a law that was called the Ermächtigungsgesetz (enabling act) that allowed the chancellor in a state of emergency to decide on laws instead of the parliament, i.e. giving the chancellor both the executive authority and the judiciary which means to make him a dictator. Hitler declared the state of emergency, the parliament at that time agreed on the enabling act, this way making Hitler a dictator.
His power of course depended mainly on the large number of followers he had, his organizations like the Gestapo (secret police), SS and SA and his propaganda, it was a mixture of fear and consent that stopped people from taking his power from him.

Because people in general are like sheep, they hate to have to think for themselves, so when someone comes along who is a master of public speaking and has the ability to have people believe what ever they say is true, The masses sheeplike as they are follow where they are led..This man was able to convince a whole country that they were victims and once having done that, convincing them that everything he said was the truth and for their benefit and the benefit of the country as a whole was easy and once convinced they became a force with with he could carry out his plan to form what was in his eyes a perfect world...

By playing the emotions of the people and taking advantage of everything that went wrong, including the oppressive treaty conditions that ended WWI and using the built-in prejudices of the community enhanced by fake incidents that he could blame on Jews, Catholics, etc., that were already hated in various ways.

He told the people what they wanted to hear.
Germany was shackled (rightfully so) by the Treaty they signed after losing WW1. So he made the people think Germany should be powerful again.
