The day, Friday, is named after the Norse goddess of sexuality, Frygga (from whom we also get the slang verb, "to frig"). Thursday is named for the Norse god of Thunder, Thor. The band, Nine Inch Nails is named for the type of nails that were used to crucify people, including Jesus Christ. The designer, Versacci, uses the head of Medusa as his logo. The scientific term, arachnid, comes from the story of Arachne. We get teh word, "penny" from the n ame of the wife of Ulysses, Penelope. Penelope is a synonym, now, for faithfulness and loyalty. Well, a modern name that came from Mythology is Narcissus. It is the name of a flower. And there is a word that came from the name which is Narcissistic which means to have excessive pride. The story is about an elf named echo who cheated the goddess Juno who was looking for her husband and figured he was with other nymphs cheating on her. So echo distracted her. Juno told Echo, "From your tongue you have cheated me. You will have what you always come to acquire. The last word." So echo went traveling in the woods and came across narcissus who was the most beautiful guy (nymph I'm guessing) in the forest. She tried to win him over with her words but couldn't because she could only say the last word he says. When he rejected her, she went away and lived in caves where her flesh shriveled and her bones turned to rock. That's why when you go in caves and yell something out you hear your same words. One nymph who narcissus has played prayed to the revenge goddess who granted her wish. The nymph wished narcissus will meet someone who he will not have. So narcissus came across a pond where he stared into the water. He saw his reflection and tried to kiss his reflection in the water but it went away. So he spent his days looking into the water. And eventually he turned into a flower which is now called narcissus. This flower is purple with white on the inside. :) (this is my favorite myth.)
