Environment Act 1995

Contaminated land provisions. Affirmative duty imposed on local authorities to survey their land and force clean-up of dangerously polluted sites.

Water Resources Act 1999

Effective 1 May 1999
Little noticed when it came into effect but potentially very significant in its compulsory clean-up provisions.
Some overlap with Environment Act 1995

There is also the Environmental Liability Directive.
