If he is starting out, do it for free. A typical new dj (after establishing himself) charges roughly 80 - 150 pounds/ show.

There are many aspects to deciding how much he/she should charge.

Which part of the UK are they in? Prices in the north vary greatly from London for example.
What sort of venues are they going to do? Pubs will be far less than Hotels. Corporate will pay more than local parties.
What sort of DJing are they going to do? R&B, vinyl, party (for example)?
What sort of equipment are they going out with? If they are going out with a 'bedroom' kit don't bother but if there is an investment in the equipment then it is worth doing

It may be worth seeing if your friend can go out with an experienced DJ for a few gigs to see how they enjoy the work side of it and maybe get some ideas on how to run a good night.

It may also be worth him ringing around some DJs in their area to see what is the average price.

It depends on what kind of DJ he is, why not phone a few in your area and pose as a customer and ask.
In London they are anything from £250 to £400 per night.
