I had my first prenatal appt. when I was about 5 weeks pregnant, i had very heavy bleeding with clots for 5 days. I was sure that I miscarried. But then a week after, I found out that I'm still pregnant and my hcg has been increased. The nurse told me that I might be pregnant with a twin and miscarried one.

By the way I'm 23 and this is my 1st pregnancy
I was just wondering how often this can happen. Has anyone experienced this?

This is very common actually.Sometimes it is called the vanishing twin syndrome when one twin stops developing in utero and gets reabsorbed back into the womans body. If u were indeed pregnant with twins this is very possible if they were fraternal twins (different sacs),then one twin would be likely to pass through the vagina through miscarriage and the other one surviving. They really wont be able to tell you for sure but it is very likely. Otherwise u could have had an unusual bleed, which is very uncommon but can happen. I read that this also happened to a woman with clots and heavy fire engine red bleeding and turned out her baby was fin. Just be glad that your baby is safe inside you right now and just look ahead. Good Luck and Congrats!

In a few weeks, they'll probably do an ultrasound to check for heartbeat(s). Then you'll know. I had an ultrasound around 7 weeks which showed two heartbeats (twins). 7 weeks is about the earliest they can detect heartbeats. If they don't mention an ultrasound, you should ask for one, even though you're only 23. It's too hard wondering -- much better just to know what's going on.

This can definitely happen and is, actually, quite common. Several of my friends have experienced this. Good luck with your pregnancy!
