a bit = binary digit, which is either a 1 or a 0
1024 = 2^10

1 in decimal = 1 in binary
2 = 10
3 = 11

Put on your thinking cap....

8 bits = 1 byte

a kilobyte = 1000 bytes a.k.a. 1K byte
a megabyte = 1 million bytes a.k.a. 1M byte
a gigabyte = 1 billion bytes a.k.a. 1G byte

Hope this helps.
