When I worked in catering, more than once when customers left without paying the boss took the lost bill money out of tips. I don't think that there's an actual law, other than the one of the boss creating their own shi^^y laws. Basically we get the raw end of the deal. I know someone who left his job over it, and I know I felt like walking too. The problem with catering staff is that owners rely on the fact that there's always someone to take your job, and us not joining a union etc. I've also worked places where they didn't do that, and were just pi**ed off that they'd lost cash. In terms of employment rights issue, i'd be interested to hear as I always felt like I had none really, certainly not on paper (no contract etc). Good luck. And hope the bill wasn't too much

There are laws against leaving without paying but not about who is responsible for the criminal party's bill (as far as I know)
If your working for a scumbag who is trying to get you to foot the bill contact the department of labor and inquire about the legal grounds for that. In the meantime look for another job, ask any prospective employer about that up front and once you have a new job quit at dinner rush on that a**hole and make sure you let him/her know exactly why.

Actually, in most areas, the wairt staff are held responsible. This is an individual restaraunt issue. Some owners and managers will absorb the loss a few times, but will get a bit touchy if it happens a lot.

Absolutely not. In fact, an employer can only deduct wages for losses, damaged equipment, etc. that can be shown to have been INTENTIONALLY caused by the employee.
Many employers try to deduct wages from their employees when a cash register is short, people leave without paying, etc. Not only is that morally wrong, it's against the law.

dont think there is a law but the resturant should have to pay... it isn't your fault... you just work there..and if they treat thier staff like that, why would you want to work for a place like that? i mean they must make enough money to cover the loss. and they want you to respect people... where is the respect to you?
