only fance goldfish should be with fancy gold fish. No comets. they are much quicker and tend to be much more aggressive. You can get a pleco. Or you can get apple snails or gold apple snails. I have seen goldfish and tropical fish live long lives together in the same tank but it compleatly depends on each indavidual fish. they all have diffrent temperments. ANd if it will fit into another fish's mouth it will be food.

Goldfish create much more waste than other fish. They NEED a filter. Most tropical fish should be stocked no more than an inch of fish per gallon of water. Goldfish it is 5 gallons of water per inch of fish so a 10 gal is not reccomended as you can only safely have 2 one inch fish and they wont be an inch for long.

Id suggest trying live bearing fish such as mollies, platys and guppies. They are much easier to care for and you can have a wider variety. And they give birth to live young. If you want to raise them you can btu if they are not seperates they will most likely be eaten.

make sure you talk to the pet store about having your tank properly set up. It takes about a month to have an atmosphere that can maintain life. Putting them into a new set up with no bacteria would be like putting a person on mars. You would not survive. You need to build up your good bacteria. Buying a bottle of CYCLE and pouring the whole thing in ( you cannot overdose your fish with this product) can help speed up the process. It IS good bacteria in a bottle. Add 2 cap fulls weekly after that.

if you want fancy goldfish, then get a minimum of a 20 gallon tank, and a maximum of 2 goldfish. Goldfish, grow to be around 8-12" each, not including the tails. when looking at the 1" per gallon rule, you have to remember that i'ts per inch of FULL GROWN fish. my veiltail had one other tank mate in a 10 gallon tank, for almost 4 years. one day, it woke up, and ate the fins off the other goldfish, then beat the other fish until it died. Goldfish should be in a species tank only - meaning, only goldfish. and remember, they can live for 15-20 years if taken care of properly.

My veiltail is getting a 20 gallon tank for xmas next year. then, i'll get 5 or 6 neon tetras for this old 10 g tank.

good luck!! hth!

"Can I house a panda, a black moor and a fan tail in the same tank? (3 types of fancy goldfish)" Absolutely. "Should I/Can I house some shrimp in the tank?" Most shrimp are warm water, so its not advisable to house them with cold water fish like goldfish. "What fish should I keep with the 2 or 3 goldfish to help with ammonia buildup and other 'cleaning' issues?" You really shouldn't keep any other fish with 2 or 3 goldfish in a small tank like that. Just make sure you do regular water changes to take care of the ammonia, and don't overfeed. You should be fine. "Can I use large pebbles instead of sand in the bottom of the tank? (half dollar size, flattened pebbles)" You can use any substrate you want, but keep in mind that large pebbles will create spaces where leftover food can get stuck, and its not going to be something you can simply suck up with a gravel vac. You will need to remove the rocks to get at the rotting food before it pollutes your tank. Its probably better that you stick with pea gravel or sand. It makes cleaning much easier That being said, thank you for doing your research and asking questions. Good luck with your tank!

Goldfish should be kept in a species tank. A ten gallon tank you can put two small goldies for about a year, then you have to start your upgrades. No other fish has the same water parameters as goldfish, though you can get ones that will survive. Keep your goldfish only with other types of the same body type and number of fins.

A ten gallon is not even enough room for ONE goldfish, since they are very dirty fish and can get up to 12 inches long.

Also, no other tankmates go great with goldfish because goldfish are coldwater fish and most everything else you'll see at the pet store is tropical or saltwater.

one inch of fish per gallon, 2 inch per gallon for goldfish. Any community fish would work with goldfish. Such as tetras, guppies... basically any type of non-agressive fish. (which is what a community fish is)

only other varieties of goldfish.

Just don't mix tropical fish with your cold water fancy goldfish - it's not good for their health and they have diff needs.

Good luck!
