When ammonium nitrate is heated, you do not get nitrogen gas. Nitrous oxide (N2O) is formed. The balanced equation is:

NH4NO3 ---> N2O + 2 H2O

NH4NO3 = N2 + .5 O2 + 2 H2O or 2NH4NO3 = 2N2 + O2 + 4H20

either
NH4 NO4 == N2 + 2 H20

or

NH4 NO3 == N2O + H20
