I feel that if everyone took care of themselves first, the parent-child relationship would be wacked, & people would be self absorbed & there wouldn't be "selfless". But then again, if you don't take care of yourself, you may not be able to help others....

everything in moderation..help yourself and help others at the same time would be a better alternative. multi-tasking basically.

I think this is a philosophy that everyone should practice. However, it seems that it is easier said than done. I don't see how a person can extend his/her positive influence if that person is consumed with his/her own issues.
I'm not sure why you ask the question. It may be you know someone that has a personal struggle. It seems to me that asking God's intervention never hurts, and I would recommend this approach to anyone.

If you take care of your own screw ups first, you'll be more likely to be able to help others. Take the plank out of your own eye before removing the sliver in the other guys? .......or something like that. :)
