Being lonely is mental, and is always a bad thing. Being alone is 1) physical, and can be a good thing or a bad thing; 2) exactly the same as being lonely.
You can enjoy being alone because you want some peace and quiet (and 'alone' means that there is no one else physically around you). You couldn't say that you enjoy being lonely, though.
You can feel lonely when you're in a crowd, possibly because you don't know anyone there - and you can also feel alone in a crowd for the same reasons.

you can be alone but not lonely
alone means you are on your own, nor one else is there, I am not lonely when I am alone normally.
to be lonely is meaning you wish someone was there ( usually someone special ) but you can still be lonely when you are not alone, like a kid at school, with no friends surrounded by people, he would feel alone but he is lonely....

Both can mean so many things in different ways.
Alone is by yourself. "I alone conquered the mountain". Or, "even in a crowd, I'm alone".
Lonely is yearning. Yearning for companionship, or a loved one, or missing an old friend. Hope this helps.

According to The American Heritage® Dictionary and Roget's, they are synonomous. But I believe alone is a physical truth of not being among others and lonely is a matter of self esteem and spiritual emptiness.

If you are alone, it means you are by yourself.
If you are lonely, it means you are longing for some company.
So, you can be alone without necessarily being lonely.
