I was looking to do the same thing not so long ago and found these great instructions! They worked perfectly! The only real down side is that none of the MP3s are labeled as the songs titles that they are...they're all labeled like F00 and F01 and so on... but if you aren't looking for specific songs and just want to transfer everything off of your iPod then just go through all the folders and everything should be there!
Here's a way to quickly get files off a PC iPod without any extra software.
1. Plug in your iPod.
2. From the Desktop, go to My Computer and find the iPod (usually designated by a drive letter. i e. E: or F:)
3. Open it.
4. Go to Tools > Folder Options > View (the tab) > scroll to Show Hidden Files and Folders and click it.
5. Click OK
6. Go back to your iPod folder/drive, there you will find a new folder called iPod_Control
7. Open it.
8. The Music folder in it will have a bunch of folders named F00, F01 and so on. THEY HAVE YOUR MP3s. Look through the folders to find your stuff.

Warning! If you are not using the computer that the ipod was synced with you will lose the content of the ipod. Ipods are supposed to sync with one computer. As someone else said you will not be able to move music from the ipod to the library unless the music is on the hard drive of the ipod, which is doubtful. You will have to start over and add the songs to your library and then sync the ipod to the library. I know this sucks, but thats the way it goes. my daughter was given an ipod by her cousin (it was his) and when she plugged into her computer it was wiped clean. She had to start over. Good luck.
