Why oh why should England stay joined to Scotland, lets get that border up asap. Think of all the money we will save in social security payments, what do they have that we want? We dont need them to stand with us, if they want to stand alone let them as long as they dont expect us to keep paying them money for running costs they may have.

We dont need them to stand with us, - They don't need us to stand with them. Tell that to Her Majesty's Forces in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc

if they want to stand alone let them - If we want to stand alone let us.

Not suprisingly you've fallen for the media and government hype about subsidies paid to Scotland. If you dig into the governments own records you'll see that a commissioned report concludes that "Scotland has contributed a surplus of between £80 and 90 billion to the coffers of the UK exchequer" (a further report put the figure at £81.2 billion). (source: http://www.siol-nan-gaidheal.com/subsidy.htm)

If you're wanting to cut Social Security payments then it's London that needs a border around it - 11% of the UK population and 19% of the Social Security budget, almost twice the national average. Unemployment is higher in London than anywhere else and is rising whereas in Scotland it's falling (sources: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4186827.stm and http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/3631417.stm). This is despite the government, which is supposedly a national government, awarding over 50% (and rising) of all contracts to companies in the south-east and only 4% (and falling) to companies in Scotland. If this weren't the case then unemployment in London and the south-east would be astronimical and there would be negative unemployment in Scotland.

What do they have that we want? In a word... oil. Over 1.5 trillion dollars worth of it lying under the seas off the coast of Scotland (sources http://www.rte.ie/business/2007/0115/oil.html and http://hubbert.mines.edu/news/Ivanhoe_00-2.pdf).

If Scotland separated from England and regained control if it's oil reserves then the English economy would effectively collapse. An ongoing annual tax increase per household of almost £5000 per year would be needed to balance the deficit. At the same time every household in Scotland would enjoy a windfall equivalent, over time, to about one million dollars.

Is it any wonder the Scottish are so keen to seperate from the English and is it any wonder that Westminster won't let them.

I'm English by the way, it just annoys me when the government and media spout what is effectively propoganda.

I am Scottish and am not anti-English, however, I do feel that the minority of people like you let down the rest of nice, respectable people from England.

I don't know much about how much money goes from England to Scotland but considering there are more people living in London than in the whole of Scotland I can't really see it making that much difference.

..and yes you are a minority. I have met many nice English people in Scotland on holiday and a lot of English couples retire to Scotland.

If this is all you have to worry about in life then your a very lucky person!

What Scotland has that England wants/needs (and through the Union actually *gets*):

@North Sea oil
@Scottish electricity surplus (we produce more than we need as we have so much hydroelectric/wind/wave power, and send you the surplus; pretty soon Scotland will have the most hi-tech wave power generators in the world and we'll have a MASSIVE surplus)
@Without Scotland, the UK goes from being the second most populous country in the European Union to number four. (Germany 83m, France 60m, Italy 58m, England+Wales+N. Ireland 55m).

The only reason Gordon Brown wants to keep the Union intact, is for the Labour constituencies in Scotland. Without them, the Conservatives would probably win an election in England and Wales.

I am in favour of Scottish Independence (I live in England). The Scots seem to be constantly critical of the English, and can be nationalist to an ugly extent.

I don't think they've got the bottle to do it, however; England subsidises Scotland too much, now the North Sea oil has run out.
